Finally we have the nail treatment product range to rival the gap left in the market by nailtiques departure in the summer of 2019. I am excited that lovely hands is first to market with Protein Formula for Nails, a range that Graftons have aimed to get as close to the nailtiques protein formulas as is possible. A key ingredient that cannot be included now is formaldehyde due to EU regulation changes, Grafton’s have worked hard on their 4 formulations, tested on real people’s nails, taken the feedback and tweaked formulations regularly to get to the point where they are confident to launch. All Protein Formulas are vegan and cruelty free.

Protein Formula for Nails 1, I maintain, substitute for nailtiques Protein Formula 1. 15ml, £14.95.
I Maintain. Nails are normal or have been through treatment and need maintenance and nourishment. Nails are generally in good health but need balance and maintenance to keep length and strength. Healthy nails are recognised by good flexibility, healthy
pinkish colour and a light sheen to the nail surface. This is the type of nails we should be aiming for. These nails require the correct balance of conditioners and protein to maintain the health of the nail. With added AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and Hexanol (plant keratin). AHA’s provide a dose of natural moisture to the nail. Hexanol is a natural and sustainable element derived from plants, it promotes growth and flexibility in the nail. Aim to get all nails onto Protein Formula 1.

Protein Formula for Nails 2, I grow, substitute for nailtiques Protein Formula 2. 15ml, £14.95.
I Grow. Nails are soft, thin and peel on the free edge and do not grow. If you have oily skin or hair then your nail type will generally be the same. Nails need targeted support to give strength. This type of nail is recognised by peeling layers particularly at the free edge and can feel thin to touch. This type of nail splits easily and struggles to maintain any length. With added Biotin and PHA’s (Poly Hydroxy Acid). Biotin is a B vitamin, it helps strengthen brittle nails. PHA’s provide a dose of natural moisture to the nail. In addition the concentrated blend of AHA’s and Panthenol will help the nail structure become denser, as it helps to rebuild links between damaged keratin fibres. Aim to get all nails onto Protein Formula 1 over time.

Protein Formula for Nails 3, I Hydrate, substitute for nailtiques Protein Formula 3. 15ml, £14.95.
I Hydrate. Nails are hard, dry and flaky. They snap and break at a low point in the nail plate. If you have dry skin and dry hair your nail type will generally be the same. Nails need a surge of moisture and hydration. Strong, dehydrated and occasionally ridged, these nails snap easily due to lack of moisture. They tend to break lower down the free edge and often at the side wall, they can often look flaky and lose their healthy pink colour. With added Glycerin and Probiotic. Glycerin acts as a nail hardener and also increases the water content in the nail. Complex Probiotic’s help preserve the natural microflora in your nails. The best formula for dealing with vertical and horizontal splits, using silk or micropore for support. For more info on nail splits click here. Aim to get all nails onto Protein Formula 1 over time.

Protein Formula for Nails 4, I strengthen, substitute for nailtiques Protein Formula 2 plus. 15ml, £14.95.
I Strengthen. Nails are extremely damaged and sensitive through the use of Gel and Acrylic, poor health of the demands of life. Nails can be badly damaged or in poor condition especially following incorrect artificial nail application or removal. Nails may have built up sensitivity due to medication, poor health or the demands of life. These nails need strengthening and conditioning. Nails need the ultimate and powerful blend of strengthening ingredients. With added Panthenol Pro-Vitamin B5 and AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids). Panthenol Pro Vitamin B5 is a humectant – it has the ability to pull moisture into the nail plate from the environment to aid flexibility and growth. AHA’s provide a dose of natural moisture to the nail. In addition the concentrated blend of AHA’s and Panthenol will help the nail structure become denser, as it helps to rebuild links between damaged keratin fibres. Aim to get all nails onto Protein Formula 1 over time.
For best results always use a nail oil, creme or balm to nourish and condition your nails and cuticles. These products can be used on bare nails or over treatment products, they will still get through, especially with breathable formulations (PF2, 3 and 4 are breathable). Use as many times a day as you can, aim for 2-4 times every day for best results. Click here for lovely hands cuticle oils, cremes and balms.
It is very normal to have a mix of nail types on your hands. Each of the Protein Formulas aim to actively treat the issues in the nails meaning that nails will move from troublesome to normal over time. When you notice the improved condition it is best to then maintain the nail with Protein Formula 1 and not continue with the previous Formula as you can over treat / over process the nail and create other issues. If you keep your nail treatment products in a cool, dark place you will increase their lifespan. It is thought that these new formulations will not thicken.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I have predominantly weak peeling nails, however a couple of the nails are hard and thick can I use two different formulas on them?
A: Yes, you can select the correct formulas to treat both nail conditions.
Q: I really want to continue to wear coloured nail polish. Will the formula still work?
A: Yes, the Protein Formula will still work (if used as a basecoat) but the results will be slower than if used as a treatment alone.
Q: I have allergies to various products. Will Protein Formula be suitable for me?
A: Anyone suffering from allergies should always check the ingredients that are listed on the Protein Formula for Nails packaging. If in doubt check with your doctor before use.
Q: I have been really happy with Protein Formula 2 but now my nails have gone quite hard and started to get little splits in them?
A: It is important that once your nails have reached optimum health that you move onto the Formula 1 as this is the correct formulation for healthy nails and will prevent nails from turning brittle or too soft.
Q: I have just picked my acrylic extensions off and my nails are in really poor condition which formula should I use?
A: Protein Formula 4 as this will help to restructure and strengthen damaged nails whilst also ensuring nail are hydrated and nourished.
Q: Does filing nails cause them to peel?
A: A good filing technique and a good quality nail file will help keep the free edge of the nail in good condition and minimise the nail layers separating, leading to peeling. Please view the new Protein Formula Crystal nail files.
Q: Is it ok to rub hand cream into your nails or do you really need a specific product for the nails?
A: The nails and skin are similar but different to each other. If you think hand cream on the nails by itself is achieving what you want it to then that is ok, Protein Formula have their own hand cream. Ideally your nails should have a natural sheen and have flexibility and resilience. If you think any of this is lacking then please use a specific nail moisturiser, or serum.
